There are a variety of content management systems available today, and Joomla has joined the ranks, and has been around since 2005. Joomla is a free, open source content management system. It is used to make publishing content on the World Wide Web so much easier.

Content management systems are used online as a way of simplifying the building of a website. Often, all one has to do is have a content management system installed, and learning how to use the back end in order to paste in content and set it up how you would like your website to look like. Sometimes the problem with content management systems, or CMSs, is that not everyone can use the system. While it does simplify building a website, not every system is easy to use. Joomla is a little different. It came about out of Mambo, and a development team worked hard to create the content management system. The team developed OpenSourceMatters. It was designed to give away information to users and web designers and anyone who wanted the coding. After the official site opened, a thousand people joined up in the first day. They continued to establish their free software community and took suggestions. In September of 2005, they re-branded Mambo as Joomla.

Joomla is a little different from other content management systems, with a different backend that allows any user to be able to create the website they want. Joomla has actually been given awards for its ability to create website so easily and that it can be extended with the use of “plugins”.

Plugins are created extensions that add additional features or functions to Joomla. These plugins can help customize your website with features you can use. Joomla has over 3,000 of these plugins available via their website. There is a directory available that organizes them and sorts them into categories. New plugins are added all the time, as developers work on new ways to make Joomla better.

Joomla has been used on all sorts of websites. Online magazines, newspapers, government applications, small business web sites, even personal home pages have been created using this CMS. It is used by the United Nations, MTV, Harvard University and many more websites. Imagine the same system used by these schools, media companies and governments is also being used by individuals as a homepage. That’s because Joomla is that versatile. It can be extended or you can make it as simple as you need for it to be. It is made so easy, especially if you are new to building websites .

Joomla is also free. It is available to everyone, and comes under the GPL license. This makes it not only usable, but you can customize the code itself as you see fit, if you would like to. Joomla is available for download at the main website, and is constantly updated and made better by a team of developers that work on it all the time.
